Solutions from Ukraine: Kyiv opens Ukraine’s first municipal driving school for veterans with disabilities
Veterans with musculoskeletal disorders, including after amputations, may need specialized driver training. A vehicle may also need to be adapted to meet a person's individual needs.
The capital has created Ukraine's first municipal specialized driving school for veterans with disabilities. Students can learn to drive from scratch, obtain a driver's license, or undergo retraining after an injury.
The training is suitable for both people who have never driven before and those who have had driving experience before being wounded. In the latter case, veterans can undergo retraining and learn to use a car equipped to meet their needs, including a hand-control system.
How does it work?
The school has already formed its first group, with 17 veterans expressing interest in the training. The institution has passed the required assessment of its classroom, and for practical category B lessons, it received specially equipped cars from the Dzhurynskyi family charitable foundation.
A service center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs is also helping implement the project. Certified instructors conduct the classes. They include veterans who completed the necessary training, passed exams, and received the right to teach others.
The school emphasizes the "peer-to-peer" principle, where the experience of a person who has gone through injury and adaptation helps other veterans during training.

The city plans to make the driving school part of a comprehensive route for veterans' automotive mobility. In the future, it will expand the list of training programs, and eventually, the courses will be available to all people with disabilities who need specialized training.
