As a teenager, the future champion came under the care of trainer Cus D'Amato and Camilla Ewald. She was born in 1905 in the village of Staromishchyna in the Ternopil region. Her parents, Ihnat and Anastasiia Ivashchuk, first emigrated to Canada, and later the family moved to the US, where they changed their surname to Ewald.
Camilla met Cus D'Amato, who trained young boxers. Together, they set up a house in Catskill, where young athletes lived and trained. For them, Ewald became someone who cared not only about everyday life but also effectively replaced a mother.
Tyson moved in with them in 1980, when he was still a teenager. That marked an important stage in his professional training. The American press called Camilla Ewald his "adoptive mother." In particular, The Washington Post described her this way in 1988.
Cus D'Amato died in November 1985, about a year before Tyson won his first championship title. Ewald remained a close person in the boxer's life. In 1993, The Washington Post again called her his adoptive mother.
Tyson later became the youngest world heavyweight champion. On November 22, 1986, he defeated Trevor Berbick by technical knockout in the second round, winning the WBC title at the age of 20 years and 144 days. Later, the boxer unified the WBC, WBA, and IBF belts.
