Drones strike major Russian fuel and energy facilities overnight – Ukraine’s General Staff
According to reports, a fire broke out on the territory of the Afipsky oil refinery in Russia's Krasnodar Krai after a drone attack. Locals reported explosions, a flash, and thick smoke over the industrial zone.
Representatives of the regional operational headquarters said emergency services were working at the scene. According to Krasnodar Krai Governor Veniamin Kondratyev, at least 10 private houses were damaged in the village of Afipsky. Officials are clarifying information about the scale of damage to the enterprise itself and possible casualties.
The Afipsky refinery is one of the major oil refining enterprises in southern Russia. Its designed capacity exceeds 6 million tons of oil per year. The enterprise produces, among other things, gasoline, diesel fuel, and fuel oil.
Another target of the attack was the Novoshakhtinsk oil products plant in the Rostov region. Regional Governor Yuri Slyusar said the enterprise temporarily suspended operations after the strike.
According to him, during the attack's repulse, Russian air defenses allegedly destroyed about 30 drones in Gukovo, Kamensk-Shakhtinsky, Novoshakhtinsk, and several districts of the region.
The Novoshakhtinsk plant is the only operating refinery in the Rostov region. Its designed capacity is about 5 million to 7.5 million tons of oil per year. The plant produces diesel fuel, fuel oil, heating and marine fuel, and straight-run gasoline. The refinery plays a strategic role in supplying Russian troops deployed in the southern direction and in the occupied territories of Ukraine.
Damage to the facilities forces the refinery to temporarily halt operations or reduce capacity, creating local fuel shortages for Russian military logistics in the south and forcing Russia to transfer fuel from its most remote regions.
Separately, Ukraine's General Staff reported strikes on two U-272 gas separation units at the Astrakhan gas processing plant.
According to the General Staff, the Astrakhan gas processing plant is part of the Gazprom system. Its designed capacity is up to 12 billion cubic meters of gas and about 7.3 million tons of gas condensate per year.
The enterprise produces commercial gas, stable gas condensate, gasoline, diesel fuel, fuel oil, liquefied petroleum gases, and technical sulfur. The General Staff noted that the plant's products are used to supply Russian troops, while technical sulfur is used to produce explosives.
Background
It should be noted that on the night of August 24, Ukraine's Defense Forces struck the federal state-owned enterprise Kamensky Combine in Kamensk-Shakhtinsky, Rostov region, Russia, for a second time. A fire was recorded on the enterprise's territory.
