Activists in South Africa mark 35 years of Ukrainian independence in Cape Town
During a quiz on Ukrainian history, participants recalled that the Ukrainian SSR was one of the founding members of the United Nations in 1945. Organizers also discussed how, in 1991, major global powers were deeply concerned about Ukraine's independence and the consequences of the Soviet Union's collapse, particularly because Ukraine had inherited the world's third-largest nuclear arsenal.

Now, after 12 years of Russia's war against Ukraine and more than four years of full-scale invasion, Ukraine has become a central pillar of European and global security. UAZA thanked the democratic world, the European Union, and everyone in South Africa who supports Ukraine's fight for freedom.
The screening of "Kherson: Human Safari" (2025) gave viewers a painful insight into life in Kherson, including Russian occupation, the forced deportation of children, the destruction of the Kakhovka Dam, and Russia's continued drone attacks on civilians.
UAZA also joined the Center for Civil Liberties campaign to raise awareness about more than 16,000 civilians who are missing or illegally detained, around 7,000 Ukrainian service members held in Russian captivity, and more than 1,300 political prisoners.
The organization also joined the Ukrainian World Congress global campaign to thank people around the world who continue to stand with Ukrainians in their fight for freedom, democracy, and human rights.
UAZA thanked Olexander Scherba and Bohdan Diachenko, Antonina Darienko, Maksym Yakovlyev, Zarina Zabrisky, Contemporary Dance Laboratory, Keith, Spadschyna by FILM.UA Group, and the UAZA team, managed during the event by Dzvinka Kachur, Katy Aleshyna, and WOW WOMAN Olha Shmaidenko.
The organizers gave special thanks to all diplomats and South African friends who joined the event.

It should be noted that on August 24, Ukraine marked 35 years since the proclamation of independence.
The heads of state and government of the United Kingdom, Estonia, Luxembourg, and Moldova, as well as European Council President António Costa, arrived in Kyiv on the morning of August 24 to mark Ukraine's Independence Day.
