“Russia Is Already Losing the War”: Ukraine’s UN Ambassador Names Three Factors
Russia is losing the war it launched against Ukraine, while its economy is coming under increasing pressure from military spending, Western sanctions, and Ukraine’s growing ability to strike Russia’s oil and gas sector. Ukraine’s Permanent Representative to the UN Andrii Melnyk made the remarks during a UN Security Council meeting marking Ukraine’s Independence Day, UATV English reports.
Melnyk said Russia’s economy is going through its most difficult period since the beginning of the full-scale invasion. According to the diplomat, three key factors are putting growing pressure on Moscow: massive military expenditures, Western sanctions, and Ukraine’s expanding capacity to strike Russian oil and gas infrastructure.
“Regardless of all the barbaric attacks against civilians in Ukraine, Russia is already losing and will ultimately lose this war. The Russian economy is experiencing its most difficult period since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. It is under pressure from enormous military spending, Western sanctions, and Ukraine’s growing ability to strike the oil and gas sector,” Melnyk said.
The Ukrainian diplomat also pointed to growing signs of concern within Russia over the state of its economy. He recalled the dismissal of Andrei Klepach, chief economist at one of Russia’s state-owned banks, which reportedly followed critical remarks about the country’s economic situation.
Melnyk argued that despite Russia’s continued attacks against Ukrainian cities and civilians, the Kremlin is increasingly struggling with the economic consequences of maintaining its war effort.
Meanwhile, more than 50 countries have called on Russia to stop attacks against civilian targets and return to negotiations. During an emergency UN Security Council meeting, the countries urged Moscow to agree to a full, immediate and unconditional ceasefire and resume negotiations aimed at achieving a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.
