Solutions from Ukraine: Zaporizhzhia creates barrier-free shelter for evacuees with reduced mobility
The need for such a facility arose from constant evacuations of frontline settlements. Dozens of people arrive in Zaporizhzhia every day and first turn to the Transit Center, where they receive humanitarian, financial, and advisory assistance. However, it remains difficult to resettle people with reduced mobility because temporary accommodation sites lack adapted rooms.
Repairs are currently underway in the building that will house the shelter for internally displaced people with reduced mobility. Workers are setting up living rooms, bathrooms, kitchen areas, and other spaces. According to Svitlana Lysenko, the most intensive stage of reconstruction is now underway:
The renovation work is scheduled to be completed by October so that people can move into a modern, comfortable, and safe space before winter begins.
"After the shelter opens, its residents will receive hot meals and support from our social specialists," Svitlana Lysenko stressed.
During the renovation, workers are paying special attention to creating a barrier-free environment. The first floor will be fully adapted for people with reduced mobility in line with state building standards. It will include:
The charitable foundation "Posmishka.UA" is financing the renovation and full equipment of the building with support from the Ukraine Humanitarian Fund under the project "Dignity and Care. Comprehensive services and protection for vulnerable evacuees." For its part, the regional budget will cover expenses not included in the project program, including the installation of fire safety systems.
"We will deliver furniture, plumbing fixtures, specialized beds for people with reduced mobility, ramps, household appliances, including washing machines and dryers, refrigerators, microwave ovens — everything necessary so that people can live in dignified conditions," said Kateryna Kutieva, regional coordinator of the charitable foundation "Posmishka.UA."
