Ukrainian teenager creates air raid alert bracelet for people with hearing impairments, winning US award
People with hearing impairments may not hear an air-raid siren, especially if they are at home or far from others. The family of 15-year-old Stepan Zots faced this problem directly: his deaf grandmother and grandfather live near the front line in Ukraine.
According to the teenager, concern for his relatives' safety prompted him to create the device.
"I keep working on the bracelet — for you," Stepan told his grandmother during a video call.
The teenager developed the Safe Signal bracelet, which can detect the sound of an air raid alert and immediately warn the user. He created the project after moving to Munich and later presented it at the Connecticut Invention Convention in the United States, where he received a medal.
"At first, it was just an idea. Now I finally have something tangible," the boy said.
The bracelet analyzes ambient sounds and detects the air-raid siren signal. It then alerts the wearer in two ways:
This allows a person with a hearing impairment to receive a warning even without an audio signal and to move to a shelter in time.
Before the full-scale war, Stepan lived in Kramatorsk and played hockey professionally. After evacuating to Germany, he adapted to his new life, continued his studies and sports, and later began working on an invention to help people with hearing impairments during air-raid alerts.

It should be noted that Roman Mielamud, a graduate of the Mariupol Lyceum in Kyiv, won a gold medal and became the overall winner of the European Olympiad in Artificial Intelligence. The Ukrainian team also took second place overall, winning two gold medals.
It is worth noting that the Ukrainian team won four medals at the International Biology Olympiad (IBO), held in the capital of Lithuania. Three participants received silver medals, while one schoolgirl won bronze. This performance became Ukraine's most successful result at the competition since 2006.
Ukrainian school students also won five awards at the European Physics Olympiad (EuPhO), held from June 12 to 16, 2026, in Gothenburg, Sweden. Thanks to this result, Ukraine took first place in the team standings among participating European countries.
