Russia attacks cargo ship carrying Ukrainian wheat in Black Sea, killing a sailor and injuring crew members
The regional head said one crew member, a Ukrainian citizen, died in the attack, while three other people were injured.
The crew was evacuated to shore, and the wounded are receiving the necessary medical care.
As of the morning of August 6, the vessel had been moored at a berth, where crews were working to eliminate the consequences of the strike and assess its technical condition.
At the same time, according to the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority, the bulk carrier MERA QUEEN was damaged during the latest attack. The strike caused a fire on board and damaged the vessel's hull.
The agency noted that the Russian army has been shelling port infrastructure and civilian merchant vessels working in Ukrainian ports and using the maritime corridor almost daily for more than a month.
The Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority stressed that Russia's systematic attacks on civilian vessels threaten not only sailors but also the safety of international shipping and global food security. It called on the international community to step up efforts to protect maritime transport.
Background
As Rubryka reported, Russian forces have been attacking civilian cargo ships in the Black Sea in recent weeks and have effectively blocked traffic through Ukraine's maritime corridor. Because of the threat to global food security, Ukraine initiated an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council.
During massive overnight Russian attacks on the port of Chornomorsk, assets belonging to Kernel, Ukraine's largest exporter of grain and sunflower oil, were also damaged. The company had to suspend operations at its port terminals due to extensive damage.
Allseeds, one of Ukraine's largest producers and exporters of vegetable oil, has also suspended operations in the Odesa region. The company cited high risks to employees and production facilities caused by Russian attacks on port infrastructure.
In addition, the logistics company Maersk temporarily suspended shipments through the Chornomorsk fishing port due to the deteriorating security situation and Russian strikes on port infrastructure. The company will redirect import cargo to Romania's port of Constanța.
Overall, as Russia has intensified attacks on port infrastructure, Ukraine has lost about a third of its capacity to export grain through key Black Sea ports. Cargo transshipment volumes have now fallen from about 6 million tonnes to 4 million tonnes per month.
