Ukrainian sumo wrestler Aonishiki becomes Tokyo police station chief for a day
Danylo Aonishiki Yavhusyshyn joined an information campaign on reducing the permitted speed on streets near residential buildings.
During the campaign, organizers handed out information leaflets to pedestrians and drivers about upcoming changes to speed limits.
How does it work?
The event took place at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, located in the Koto district. Organizers held it to inform the public about changes to speed limits: from the first day of next month, the legal speed limit for cars on roads near residential buildings will be reduced.
More than 150 fans of the Ukrainian sumo wrestler attended the event. On the road in front of the museum, organizers handed out information leaflets with the relevant details to pedestrians and drivers.
During the event, Aonishiki also urged drivers to follow safety rules.
Japan has previously used the practice of involving well-known sumo wrestlers in similar events. In particular, several months ago, Serhii Shishi Sokolovskyi was appointed one-day head of the tax office in Izumisano, Osaka Prefecture.
Background
Sumo wrestlers, even if they are not from Japan, choose a special ring name, or shikona, for competition. Danylo Yavhusyshyn competes under the shikona Aonishiki Arata, which means "Blue Brocade."
Brocade is a decorative artistic fabric with a silk base. The name may serve as a metaphor for a young but bright talent or noble strength in a young body.
As reported, in July this year, Ukrainian sumo wrestler Danylo Aonishiki Yavhusyshyn won the prestigious Nagoya Basho tournament in Japan. Despite losing his final bout of the main stage, he won the playoff and claimed the championship title.
It should be noted that in autumn 2025, Ukrainian sumo wrestler Danylo Aonishiki Yavhusyshyn won the Emperor's Cup for the first time in his career during a tournament in Japan.
Also in January 2026, the decisive day of the Hatsu Basho tournament took place at the Ryogoku Kokugikan Sumo Arena in Tokyo. Ukrainian Danylo Aonishiki Yavhusyshyn won the Emperor's Cup for the second time in a row.
As Rubryka reported, in July 2025, Aonishiki Arata, who was born Danylo Yavhusyshyn, set a new sumo record. The Ukrainian earned his first gold star, or kinboshi, for defeating Yokozuna Hoshoryu, who held the highest title before his bout with Danylo.
