Solutions from Ukraine: Diia app lets Ukrainians file for divorce online
Previously, couples had to visit a civil registry office at least twice and submit paper documents to dissolve a marriage.
From now on, couples who do not have minor children together can complete the divorce procedure online through the Diia app.
The service is available only with the mutual consent of both parties, and the procedure is completed one month after the application is submitted.
One spouse creates an application in Diia, and the other spouse must then confirm it in their own app. The service cannot be used without confirmation from the second party.
After confirmation, the system automatically checks the information in the State Register of Civil Status Acts. In this way, the data required for the procedure is verified without the need to submit paper documents in person to a civil registry office.
The procedure is completed one month after the application is submitted. At that point, a video conference is held, and the state registers the divorce.
During the one-month period, the spouses can withdraw the application. However, they can do so no later than four hours before the scheduled video conference begins.
The new online service is available only to couples who do not have minor children together. If a couple has minor children together, they still need to dissolve their marriage in court.
People who do not use the Diia app can also dissolve their marriage by submitting a joint application. To do this, both spouses must personally contact a civil registry office.
Background
It should be noted that in June, the Justice Ministry announced the start of beta testing for the divorce service in the Diia app. The service is available to couples who mutually agree to divorce and do not have minor children together.
In August, the Cabinet of Ministers extended the pilot project for registering marriages online through Diia by two years. The resolution takes effect on August 15, 2026.
