Svitolina defeats American Anisimova to reach WTA 1000 quarterfinals in Toronto
Svitolina, who is ranked ninth in the world, immediately took the lead. The Ukrainian broke twice in a row to go 4-0 up, before comfortably closing out the set 6-2.
In the second set, Elina again quickly pulled ahead, this time to 5-1. Anisimova managed to fight back to 5-4 and had a chance to continue the battle, but the Ukrainian did not allow her opponent to level the score. Svitolina confidently served for the match and completed the victory 6-2, 6-4.
Who will Svitolina face in the quarterfinals?
In the quarterfinals, the Ukrainian will face world No. 19 Ekaterina Alexandrova. The neutral-status player sensationally defeated world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the round of 16, winning 7-6, 4-6, 6-4.
Svitolina has a positive head-to-head record against Alexandrova — 3-1. They last played each other in 2021.
This will be Svitolina's fourth quarterfinal in Toronto. She has reached this stage of the Canadian tournament for the second consecutive year, and in 2017 she became its champion. Overall, this is her 28th quarterfinal at WTA 1000 tournaments.
The quarterfinal match is scheduled for August 11.
As a reminder, in May, Ukraine's top-ranked tennis player Elina Svitolina won the WTA 1000 tournament in Rome. In the final, the Ukrainian defeated American Coco Gauff in three sets to claim the 20th title of her professional career.
Svitolina also recently returned to the WTA top 10 in the updated rankings. She earned 349 ranking points for reaching the Australian Open semifinals, which allowed her to move back into the world's top 10.
