Lviv park unveils art installation honoring Ukrainian soldiers missing in action
Blue numbers marking the service members whose whereabouts remain unknown appear on its surface. Each number symbolizes a separate defender whose loved ones are waiting for their return.
The installation's author, Pavlo Kovach, explained that the maple leaf was chosen deliberately. It was meant to become a symbol of time that passes without erasing memory.
The city council stressed that, according to the concept, the barely visible numbers should remind people that the issue of those missing in action often remains outside public attention in everyday life.
At the same time, ordinary life continues around the installation: visitors walk through the park, rest, and pass by. This contrast between daily routine and the almost invisible symbols of memory is intended to prompt people to stop, look more closely, and remember those whose fate remains unknown.
Background
In late June, Znesinnia Park hosted the Land Art Festival for the first time in eight years. The ecology department of the Lviv City Council organized the event. During the festival, artists created 10 sculptures from natural materials dedicated to the impact of war on nature.
It should be added that, as of February 2026, Ukraine has entered more than 90,000 people in the Unified Register of Persons Missing under Special Circumstances. The search continues, and service members of the Defense Forces make up the majority of those listed.
As a reminder, Lviv's Stryiskyi Park has installed the monumental sculpture "The Abduction of Europa" — the last major project by the prominent Lviv sculptor Yaroslav Motyka. Lviv sculptors, veterans of the Russian-Ukrainian war and a team of like-minded supporters worked to bring the artist's idea to life, completing the project after the author's death.
Also, in August 2023, a sculpture route opened in Lviv's Stryiskyi Park as part of Sculpture Week. In total, the park installed eight sculptures by Ukrainian and foreign artists, which remained there until November 2024.
