Parliament ratifies free trade agreement between Ukraine and Türkiye

The agreement will:

Background

It is worth noting that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi and his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, signed the free trade agreement between the countries on February 3, 2022. The agreement stipulated that Türkiye would eliminate duties on 10,337 commodity items, or 95% of the total number of goods Ukraine exports, and set quotas for another 1,348 types of products.

Against this backdrop, Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Taras Kachka said the agreement would allow Ukrainian businesses to "master one of the largest markets in the region," while enabling Ukraine to "approach EU membership with export experience, established partnerships and logistics already in place."

"Currently, 77% of our exports to Türkiye are grain and sunflower oil. These are mostly raw materials that Türkiye processes domestically. The agreement removes barriers specifically for processed products: food products, feed concentrates, and more deeply processed oil products. Products made in Ukraine enter the Turkish market duty-free," Kachka wrote.

Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha wrote that Ukraine and Türkiye are thus "strengthening the foundations of long-term prosperity and stability in the Black Sea region and beyond." According to Sybiha, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan will arrive in Ukraine tomorrow, July 15.
