United to win: Ukraine receives first cutting-edge 155 mm shells made at new plant in Germany

Previously, the company supplied the Ukrainian army with shells manufactured at Rheinmetall's other plants. This delivery is the first batch produced specifically at the new facility.

The first batch includes a five-digit number of artillery shells, as well as propellant charges produced at the company's other facilities.

According to Rheinmetall, Ukrainian troops have already received more than half of the ordered ammunition. The manufacturer plans to deliver the remaining shells and propellant charges by the end of 2026.

The company says the RH1412 shells are designed for 155 mm artillery systems. They are compatible with various types of guns of this standard, have a longer effective range, and provide high target-hitting effectiveness.

Background

It should be noted that in June 2024, it became known that German defense group Rheinmetall had received a record order from the Bundeswehr for the supply of 155 mm artillery shells. Part of the ammunition will be allocated to Ukraine. Deliveries were scheduled to begin in early 2025. Germany will be the main customer. The Netherlands, Estonia, and Denmark will also take part in the order.

On June 26, 2026, German defense group Rheinmetall received a contract from Ukraine to supply long-range 155 mm artillery ammunition worth tens of millions of euros. Production under the contract has already begun, and the artillery shells are expected to be delivered to Ukraine in the first quarter of 2027.

As Rubryka reported earlier, Rheinmetall plans to double its 155 mm artillery shell production capacity at a future plant in Ukraine, which is now under construction. This will enable the production of more than 300,000 shells annually.
