United to win: Von der Leyen reveals Drone Deal between Ukraine and EU

According to her, the parties will sign the Drone Deal — an agreement aimed at deepening cooperation in drone production.

Von der Leyen said the new agreement would combine Ukraine's technological developments and experience with the production capacities of European industry.

She also stressed that the European Union views support for Ukraine's defense production as a contribution to the security of the entire continent.

As Rubryka reported, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen arrived in Kyiv on July 15. During her visit, she plans to present new steps in defense industry cooperation and discuss talks on Ukraine's accession to the EU and preparations for the next winter.

On Ukrainian Statehood Day, President Volodymyr Zelenskyi awarded European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen the Order of Europe.

European leaders and senior officials also arrived in Kyiv. They will take part in the "South-East Europe – Ukraine" summit, where they will discuss European security, defense cooperation, and political interaction.

Background

As the National Security and Defense Council explained, the Drone Deal is a multi-year international cooperation program initiated by Ukraine and aimed at comprehensive security and defense cooperation. It combines Ukraine's combat expertise, supply chains, and defense-industrial cooperation.

The Drone Deal may include several projects, depending on partners' specific requests: air defense development, scaling up drone technologies, training programs, and defense-industrial production. The entire system relies on Ukraine's combat experience.

The 10-year format of the agreements allows for a more flexible yet stable partnership. These agreements cover a long period and create a basis for stable financing of cooperation.

It should be noted that on July 7, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi met with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, during which the leaders signed an agreement in the Drone Deal format. At the time, officials reported that the number of Drone Deals concluded by Ukraine had risen to nine. Work with about 20 more countries is at various stages of negotiations.
