Lviv region hosts national wheelchair rugby competition for second time

According to the administration, organizers held a five-day sports camp before the tournament for participants who had never tried the sport before. It ran from July 6 to 10 and brought together 42 veterans.

Throughout the week, participants studied the rules and tactics of wheelchair rugby — one of the most contact-heavy adaptive sports — under the guidance of experienced coaches. In addition to sports training, the camp program included activities for recreation, psychological recovery, and informal communication among participants.

During the sports camp and on the competition days, veterans received professional support from a team of physiotherapists and rehabilitation specialists.

After the sports camp ended, the All-Ukrainian wheelchair rugby competition began. The tournament lasted two days and involved 12 teams. In total, almost 80 people took part in the competition.

In the final match, the teams "HART of Faith" and "HART of Fire" faced each other. "HART of Faith" won 31:26.

A separate part of the competition honored fallen soldiers. During the opening and closing ceremonies, participants observed a minute of remembrance. Throughout the first day of play, participants wrote the names of fallen brothers-in-arms on their armbands.

During the closing ceremony, the names of all fallen heroes appeared on the screen during a minute of silence.

"With this action, I dedicate my game to the guys I knew personally and who, unfortunately, were killed. Here I wrote the names of service members of the 124th Brigade who died during the defense of the Kherson region, as well as fighters of the Kherson Battalion who were killed while leaving Ilovaisk. Today I play in memory of them and of everyone who gave their life in this war," said Oleksandr Karpenko, a veteran from Odesa.

Earlier, it was reported that an open wheelchair rugby game took place in Lviv's Na Valakh park. For two hours, spectators watched a friendly match featuring veterans of the Russian-Ukrainian war, as well as invited guests: stand-up comedian Bohdan Vakhnych, theater and film actor Oleh Pryhoda, inclusion and accessibility expert Nina Matsiuk, Ukrainian entrepreneur Yuliia Lebedeva, and influencer Volodymyr Andrieiev.

As a reminder, a wheelchair rugby sports camp for male and female veterans and service members was scheduled to take place in Kyiv on August 25-29 last year. The competition was scheduled for August 30-31. Participants could register for both the camp and the competition at the same time or choose only one event.

It was also reported that Ukrainian veterans from Lviv successfully completed the full marathon distance — 42 kilometers — at one of the world's most prestigious races, the Schneider Electric Marathon de Paris, which took place on April 12 in the French capital.
