Nearly 7,000 Ukrainians have received treatment, prosthetics, and rehabilitation abroad since Russia’s full-scale invasion

Because of Russia's full-scale war, thousands of Ukrainians, primarily service members and veterans, need complex treatment, reconstructive surgery, prosthetics, and long-term rehabilitation. Patients receive part of this care in medical institutions abroad.

To provide this support, Ukraine's Ministry of Health, together with the European Union, the World Health Organization, and the governments of European countries, launched the Medevac Ukraine program in April 2022.

Since the program began, 6,945 Ukrainians have already received treatment in 33 countries. The largest number of patients have been accepted by:

Treatment, prosthetics, and rehabilitation are free for patients, with the costs covered by the countries that receive Ukrainians.

Ukrainian patients can receive both emergency and planned medical care abroad.

Participation in the program begins with the attending physician's decision, after which the attending physician prepares the necessary documents with the patient's or the patient's legal representative's consent.

After that, Ukraine's Ministry of Health sends a request to partner countries through a special electronic system. There, together with medical institutions, they review the request and determine whether they can accept the patient for treatment.

Regional emergency medical care and disaster medicine teams provide transportation to Ukraine's border, while medical services in the receiving countries transport patients across Europe.

It should be noted that Ukraine has launched a nationwide information campaign designed to help patients with serious and rare diseases find the necessary medicines and medical devices purchased by the state more quickly. Its goal is to explain how and where people can receive the necessary treatment free of charge in healthcare facilities.
