June in Ukraine: a glimpse through Rubryka's lens

Rubryka readers collected 125 books, two board games, and stationery for children's workshops at the foundation's request. Rubryka also held a shared reading event with the children supported by the foundation, reading Vsevolod Nestaiko's Toreadors from Vasiukivka. The children came up with pen names, entered literary contests, and won prizes.

A Russian Shahed drone struck the altar area of the Dormition Cathedral at the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most significant spiritual and cultural landmarks in Ukraine and the world. The attack happened as the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra is preparing to mark the 975th anniversary of its founding and the 100th anniversary of the preserve.

Preliminary estimates showed that 19 structures within the preserve, including the Dormition Cathedral, the Tower of St. John Kushchnik, and other landmarks from different historical periods, were affected.

Several cultural, government, and commercial facilities were also damaged on June 15. Among them were Mystetskyi Arsenal, the Oleksandr Dovzhenko National Film Studio, and the building of Ukraine's High Anti-Corruption Court.

Oleksandr Dovzhenko Film Studio is one of the oldest film studios in Ukraine, where renowned directors such as Dziga Vertov, Oleksandr Dovzhenko, and Sergei Parajanov worked. Preliminary estimates show that 80% of the studio's costume collection was destroyed in the attack. Some items survived only because they had been stored in other buildings, museums, or exhibition spaces.

A few days after the strike, the film studio asked Kyiv residents for help — and they responded:

On June 14, Rubryka attended and reported on KyivPride Park, a charity and educational festival held ahead of the KyivPride March. The event featured panels with LGBTQ+ activists and experts discussing the most pressing issues for the Ukrainian queer community, a remembrance area to honor LGBTQ+ military service members and raise their visibility, and a fundraiser for air defense systems.

On June 21, two very different crowds took to the streets of central Kyiv. One celebrated the 10th anniversary of the KyivPride March and called for equality and human rights. The other rallied in defense of what it called "traditional values." Rubryka reported on both events.
