Spain launches new training course for Ukrainian soldiers as part of EU military assistance mission
Within the EUMAM Ukraine cooperation framework, 21 Ukrainian servicemembers completed the training. The main goal of the course was to improve Ukrainian soldiers' skills in the use, operation, and maintenance of small arms.
The training program was structured in stages to ensure:
During the first stage, participants studied various weapons systems through theoretical and practical classes. The program covered both individual small arms and crew-served weapons used by units and operated by teams.
The second stage focused on weapons maintenance. Ukrainian servicemembers gained knowledge on performing first-level technical maintenance, carried out directly by the weapon user, as well as second-level maintenance, which involves specialists responsible for repair and servicing of relevant systems.
The final part of the course consisted of live-fire exercises. During practical training, servicemembers applied their skills both on foot and in coordination with different combat platforms.
Special attention was also given to safe and responsible handling of weapons under various operational conditions.
A significant part of the training was also focused on improving coordination between servicemembers during the use of crew-served weapons, which require well-coordinated teamwork.
"Thanks to such practical and safe training, Ukrainian servicemembers are improving their level of technical readiness and operational autonomy, directly adapting the acquired knowledge to the current needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in wartime conditions," the General Staff noted.
Spain has also emphasized its continued participation in the European Union Military Assistance Mission to Ukraine (EUMAM Ukraine).
The training of Ukrainian servicemembers is carried out under the coordination of a Training Coordination Centre operating under the command of the Operational Command of the Spanish Armed Forces.
Training activities are coordinated with the involvement of various international structures, both within the European Union and under broader multinational cooperation frameworks.
Since the launch of the European mission, Spain has significantly expanded the range of training courses for Ukrainian servicemembers. They are currently conducted at bases and units of:
The Armed Forces of Ukraine expressed gratitude to Spain and the European Union for their support and assistance.
As a reminder, it was previously reported that the UK-led training mission Interflex, under which more than 63,000 Ukrainian servicemembers have been trained, is moving into a new phase. The program will focus on advanced specialized training and will expand into aviation, medical, engineering, and logistics areas.
As of January, more than 62,000 servicemembers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine had completed training within the Interflex operation in the United Kingdom since 2022. The program is one of the key elements of military support for Ukraine from London and partner countries.
In Canada, training for Ukrainian combat medics includes the use of special effects to simulate real battlefield conditions.
Norway is also among the countries participating in this initiative, providing training for Ukrainian defenders since October 2022 to support Ukraine's fight for independence.
