Ukrainian high jumper Mahuchikh wins gold at Continental Tour gold meet in Zagreb
Their rivals included 2024 Olympic bronze medalist Eleanor Patterson, 2025 World Championships bronze medalist Angelina Topić, and Montenegrin record holder Marija Vuković.
How did the Ukrainians perform?
Herashchenko was the first of the two Ukrainians to enter the competition, clearing 1.75 meters. She then cleared the next two heights on her first attempts, including 1.85 meters.
Mahuchikh and Australia's Eleanor Patterson skipped the opening three heights and entered the competition at 1.90 meters. Both cleared the bar on their first attempts. Herashchenko, however, missed on her first try at that height and failed to clear it afterward, ending her competition.
Mahuchikh passed on 1.93 meters. Patterson, Topić, and Guinean high jumper Fatoumata Binta Diallo cleared that height on their first attempts. With that jump, Diallo set a new national record, improving her personal best by one centimeter. Vuković also cleared the bar.
At 1.95 meters, Mahuchikh was the only athlete to clear the height on her first attempt. Only two others — Topić and Patterson — managed to get over the bar. At 1.97 meters, Topić passed, Patterson failed to clear the height, and Mahuchikh made it over on her third attempt.
Mahuchikh then passed 1.99 meters, while Topić failed to clear the height. That result secured the gold medal for the Ukrainian.
After clinching victory, Mahuchikh asked for the bar to be raised to 2.01 meters, but she was unable to clear it in three attempts.
Continental Tour — Zagreb
"Competing outside a stadium is always a different experience. I saw a lot of Ukrainians here — that felt very warm and special to me," she added.
