Young bison Ukka joins European bison conservation program at Kyiv Zoo

The European bison became extinct in the wild at the beginning of the 20th century and was preserved only through the long-term efforts of zoos and conservation institutions across multiple countries.

Today, Ukka is busily exploring her enclosure and slowly adapting to life within the larger bison herd. She has already begun sampling the adult menu, although she still continues to drink her mother's milk.

Visitors can see Ukka in the hoofed animals section of the Kyiv Zoo.

For reference

The European bison is the largest land mammal in Europe and one of the most successful examples of the recovery of an endangered animal population.

All newborn bison are registered in the international studbook and receive unique names. These names are assigned according to special rules that make it possible to identify both the animal's country and year of birth. The names of bison born in Ukraine begin with the letters UK. That is why the youngest resident of the Kyiv Zoo was given the name UKka.
