Zelenskyi thanks UK PM Starmer for continued support of Ukraine

"Keir, thank you for all our cooperation, your support, and the joint decisions that have helped make our Europe and our protection of life stronger. The United Kingdom has been, is, and will remain among the world's leaders. Here in Ukraine, we deeply value Britain, and every meeting and every conversation we have had has always been filled with real substance," Zelenskyi wrote.

The president also thanked Starmer for his active position, constant communication, and efforts aimed at advancing decisions that, in his view, genuinely helped Ukraine.

"I wish the United Kingdom and all British people every success as well as realisation of your national goals. We have confidence in Britain," the Ukrainian president added.

What is known about the political crisis in Britain

As reported, on Monday, June 22, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his resignation.

The political crisis in the United Kingdom intensified after the local elections held in May. As a result of those elections, the Labour Party lost control of the Welsh Parliament for the first time and saw its representation in various legislative bodies across the country decrease by approximately 1,400 seats compared to previous elections.

Following the electoral setback, Starmer took responsibility for the results but refused to step down as Labour Party leader and Prime Minister. Later, around 100 Labour members of the House of Commons publicly demanded his resignation. Members of the government subsequently joined those calls.

According to The Guardian, following Starmer's resignation, Reform UK leader Nigel Farage called for a general election. He stated that voters "will not tolerate being treated as fools" and urged Starmer's successor to call a new nationwide vote.

"Starmer is not the first prime minister I have removed, and he will not be the last. David Cameron. Theresa May. Rishi Sunak. And next will be Andy Burnham. The reason for each of these leaders' failures is the same," Farage said.

In his view, a general election should be held as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese paid tribute to Keir Starmer, saying that he could be "proud" of his contribution to the United Kingdom.

"When the time comes for Keir to leave Downing Street, he can be proud of the contribution he has made to the country he loves and to the Labour Party he led back into government in 2024," Albanese said.

The Australian prime minister also spoke positively about his cooperation with Starmer.

"I am grateful for the opportunities we have had to work together to strengthen our AUKUS defence and security partnership, to support the brave people of Ukraine, and to protect children from the harms that can be caused by social media," Albanese noted.

It is worth recalling that former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak joined the International Advisory Council on Economic Renewal under the President of Ukraine. In that role, he will provide advice on Ukraine's reconstruction and the attraction of foreign investment.
