"Europe is strongest when Europeans act together": Zelenskyi sums up Ukraine-Nordic-Baltic summit
The prime ministers of Estonia, Denmark, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Finland, and Sweden also attended the meeting.
"Europe is strongest when Europeans act together, not separately. This is what we are achieving in all our formats. On Sunday, we had the Ukraine–E3 format. Today, it is a Ukraine–NB8 meeting. And we stay in regular contact with the United States. We are preparing together for the upcoming EU and NATO summits, as well as for meetings around the G7 summit. All of this can bring real results ," Zelenskyi stressed.
During the summit, the parties discussed three key areas of cooperation:
The participants paid special attention to support for the PURL program, the development of a European anti-ballistic missile defense system and Ukraine's European integration.
Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal condemned Russian strikes on Ukraine's civilian and critical infrastructure and stressed the need to continue supporting Kyiv. According to him, Estonia supports Ukraine's membership in the EU and NATO.
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre said his country remained ready to continue helping Ukraine, particularly in the areas of air defense, protection against ballistic missiles, energy and humanitarian needs.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stressed the need to rearm Europe and develop defense innovation, emphasizing Ukraine's important role in strengthening the continent's security.
Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo also said that support for Ukraine remains one of Europe's key security priorities. He also spoke in favor of opening all negotiation clusters on Ukraine's accession to the EU before the start of the summer recess in European institutions.
In addition, Icelandic Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir stressed that support for Ukraine rests on shared democratic values and respect for international law.
At the same time, Latvian Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs called for developing the anti-drone capabilities of the region's countries and said Latvia stood ready to make new contributions to the PURL program.
Lithuanian Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė stressed the importance of strengthening NATO's eastern flank and highlighted Ukraine's unique experience in defense and countering modern threats.
For his part, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said support for Ukraine was an investment in the security of all of Europe, while increasing pressure on Russia would help strengthen European security.
Background
The Ukraine-Nordic-Baltic summit is taking place in Tallinn on June 9.
In addition to Ukraine, the heads of government of the NB8 countries focused on competitiveness, the development of artificial intelligence and regional security. Following the meeting, the prime ministers of the Nordic-Baltic Eight are expected to adopt a joint statement and a declaration on deepening security and defense cooperation between the NB8 and Ukraine.
During a press conference after the summit, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi said Russia uses about 650 drones and between 35 and 100 missiles against Ukraine every day. At the same time, he said, Ukraine is gradually increasing its own capabilities to respond to such attacks.
The head of state stressed that if Ukraine can use about 600 drones and missiles, Russians will feel the war in the same way Ukrainians feel it today.
