United to win: Ukraine and Belgium outline defense priorities for the rest of 2026

During the talks, the ministers discussed opportunities to expand cooperation on drones and joint industrial projects. Ukraine supports all mechanisms that strengthen its defenses and its allies' capabilities.

Yevhenii Khmara also highlighted Belgium's role in repairing F-16 fighter jets and supplying spare parts. Ukraine is also counting on additional deliveries of F-16 munitions, including those needed to counter jet-powered drones.

Ukraine's Ministry of Defense thanked Belgium for its support and willingness to develop a mutually beneficial defense partnership.

Background

It should be noted that Belgium plans to purchase 15 Gepard self-propelled anti-aircraft systems for eventual transfer to Ukraine. The initiative is part of a 1 billion euros military aid package approved by the Belgian government in early April.

Earlier, Belgium approved a new defense aid package for Ukraine, including 100 million euros earmarked for the maintenance and support of F-16 fighter jets and other military equipment.

It is worth noting that, so far, Ukraine has not received any of the 30 F-16 fighter jets promised by Belgium. The Belgian Ministry of Defense has explained that specific delivery dates for the aircraft have not been finalized.

In May 2025, Defense Minister Theo Francken stated that Ukraine's Air Force could receive F-16s from Belgium sooner than initially expected, though he did not provide an exact timeline. He added that Belgium is committed to being "active" in the "Coalition of the Willing."
