Do I need war risk insurance for Lviv?
Do you need war risk insurance for Lviv? Learn about the city’s security situation, entry requirements, policy costs and suitable coverage options
Lviv is located in western Ukraine and is generally less exposed to attacks than many cities closer to the front line, but it is not outside the reach of missile and drone strikes. For foreign visitors, war risk insurance is both a practical safeguard and an important part of preparing for a trip to Ukraine.
Lviv is one of the most popular destinations for foreigners visiting Ukraine. The city is relatively far from the front line, has a developed transport network, numerous hotels and restaurants, and remains an important centre for business, humanitarian work, tourism and transit. These factors can create the impression that travelling to Lviv is almost the same as visiting any other European city.
That assumption is incorrect. Lviv and the surrounding region have repeatedly been affected by missile and drone attacks. Russian strikes have targeted infrastructure in western Ukraine, including energy and other critical facilities. Residential buildings and civilian areas have also been damaged. In March 2026, a Russian drone and missile attack caused casualties in Lviv and set a building in the historic centre on fire. In July, a missile attack on the city killed one person and injured more than 30 others, including children.

The fact that Lviv is comparatively safer does not mean that the risk is absent. It means that the nature and frequency of the risk differ from those in frontline regions.
Lviv is generally considered one of the safer large Ukrainian cities because of its geographical location in the west of the country. It is farther from the active front line than cities in the east and south, and the city is not a regular ground-combat zone. However, distance from the front line does not protect the city from long-range weapons.
The main risks for visitors include:
The scale of attacks against Ukraine has also increased the importance of taking western regions into account when assessing travel risks. In June 2026 alone, Ukrainian cities and civilian targets were affected by 5,920 air strikes, including attacks involving long-range drones and missiles. Although air-defence systems intercept many incoming weapons, the interception rate is not 100%, and debris can still cause injuries and property damage.
Lviv’s relative safety should therefore be understood in comparative terms. The city may have a lower risk level than frontline settlements, but it remains part of a country under martial law and subject to missile and drone attacks. A short stay in the city does not eliminate the possibility of an incident.
It is also important to distinguish between staying in central Lviv and travelling through the region. A visitor who arrives by train, rents a car, visits smaller towns or continues towards another part of Ukraine may face a different level of exposure. The route, duration of the trip and destination outside Lviv all affect the appropriate level of insurance coverage.

Yes. If you are a foreigner travelling to Lviv, you should choose a policy that explicitly includes war risk coverage. A standard travel insurance policy may cover illness, accidents and emergency medical treatment, but many standard policies exclude injuries connected with war, military activity, explosions or terrorism.
This exclusion is particularly important in Ukraine. If a visitor is injured by blast pressure, debris, fire or another consequence of a missile or drone attack, a standard policy may not pay compensation unless war risks are specifically included in the contract.

The phrase “war risk insurance” does not automatically mean that every possible event is covered. Before purchasing a policy, check:
The distinction between active and passive war risks is especially important. Some policies cover accidental injuries caused by the consequences of military activity but exclude situations in which a person deliberately enters an active combat zone or participates in military operations. For an ordinary visitor to Lviv, the relevant protection is usually coverage for accidental injuries caused by attacks, explosions, fires or falling debris.
Travelling to Ukraine? War risk insurance is mandatory for foreign visitors. Arrange your policy before departure so that it is valid and activated when you cross the border.
The right policy depends on the length and purpose of your trip. Visit Ukraine offers two relevant options for visitors: a plan with coverage of up to 100,000 UAH and a plan with coverage of up to 30,000 EUR.
For a short visit to Lviv, the Armor 100,000 UAH plan may be suitable. It is designed for travellers who are staying for a limited period and need basic protection against medical consequences and specified war-related injuries. The plan costs from €3.56 per day with the available discount. Medical care is covered up to 50,000 UAH, while the compensation schedule includes specific amounts for injuries such as fractures, concussion, penetrating head wounds, loss of sight or hearing, spinal cord injuries and death resulting from a passive war-risk accident.
This option can be considered for a brief tourist visit, a family visit or a short business trip when the traveller plans to remain mainly in Lviv and does not intend to travel through high-risk areas. Its lower price makes it practical for a one- or two-day stay, but its limits are much lower than those of an extended medical policy.
For a longer stay, the Armor 30,000 EUR plan provides broader protection. It offers coverage of up to 30,000 EUR, includes medical care and COVID-19 treatment within the applicable limits, and provides protection against specified war-related events. The plan costs about €4.40 per day, depending on the current price and discount.
The higher-limit plan is more appropriate if you are staying in Lviv for several days or weeks, working in Ukraine, volunteering, travelling between regions or visiting areas outside the city. It is also preferable if you want protection against higher medical expenses rather than only fixed compensation for listed injuries.
The two options should not be treated as identical policies with different price tags. The 100,000 UAH plan is primarily a basic, lower-limit option for short stays. The 30,000 EUR plan is intended for travellers who need a substantially higher medical ceiling and broader financial protection. The exact list of insured events, exclusions and payment conditions must be checked in the policy wording before purchase.
Planning a trip to Lviv? Choose war risk insurance for your journey on Visit Ukraine and select the policy that best matches the length, route and purpose of your visit.
The cost depends mainly on the plan, the number of insured days and any current discount. For the Visit Ukraine options described above, the basic Armor 100,000 UAH plan costs from €3.56 per day, while the Armor 30,000 EUR plan costs approximately €4.40 per day.visitukraine+1
For a three-day stay, the basic plan would cost from approximately €10.68, while the expanded plan would cost around €13.20 at those listed daily rates. The price difference is relatively small compared with the difference in the maximum coverage limit.
This is why the cheapest policy is not always the most economical choice. If a visitor requires treatment that exceeds the basic plan’s limits, the difference in the purchase price becomes insignificant compared with the potential cost of treatment paid personally.
When comparing policies, do not look only at the daily price. Check the following details:
Foreigners entering Ukraine are generally required to have valid medical insurance for the entire period of their stay. The commonly stated minimum coverage for visa and entry purposes is 30,000 EUR or its equivalent in another currency. The policy should cover emergency medical care and remain valid under wartime conditions.
This creates an important distinction between legal entry requirements and practical war-risk protection. A policy with a 100,000 UAH limit may be useful for a short stay and may include compensation for specified war-related injuries, but it does not equal a 30,000 EUR medical policy. Travellers who need a policy for a visa or whose documents are being checked against a 30,000 EUR requirement should choose a plan that actually meets that amount.
Insurance may be checked at the border. A traveller should have the policy available as a PDF on a phone and, preferably, as a printed copy. The document should contain the correct name, passport details, nationality and dates of coverage.
Pay particular attention to the activation date. Some policies can be purchased online before departure but become active only at a specified time or after the insured person crosses the border. If the policy starts too late, an activation gap may leave the traveller without coverage during the first part of the trip.
Travelling beyond Lviv? Choose a policy with a higher coverage limit and broader medical protection if your itinerary includes several Ukrainian regions.
A policy is only useful if the traveller understands how to use it. Before leaving for Lviv, save the insurer’s assistance number and review the instructions for reporting an incident. In an emergency, first contact the relevant emergency services and then notify the insurer as soon as it is safe to do so.
Visitors should also:
If your itinerary includes Kyiv, Odesa, Kharkiv, Dnipro or smaller settlements, do not select coverage solely on the basis of your first destination in Lviv. The policy should reflect the entire route, not just the city where you spend the first night.
