Solutions from Ukraine: Lviv plans garden of remembrance for defenders with trees instead of traditional memorial
The Institute of Spatial Development developed this concept for the special space together with the Lychakiv District Administration.
Trees planted by the defenders' families will form the heart of the garden. The plans call for around two dozen trees. Each will represent the story of someone who was loved, is still loved, and will always be remembered.
Remembrance in this space will extend beyond names. A living tree, growing and changing with the garden, will symbolize that memory.
Each tree will have a commemorative marker—an information plaque with a small bell. The bell will symbolize the echo of memory—what stays with us even when a person is no longer by our side. This small but personal tribute will help preserve each defender's story within the garden.
At the same time, the garden will serve not only as a place of remembrance but also as a space for people. That is why its designers envisioned it not as a traditional memorial but as a living garden that changes with the seasons, grows, thrives, and needs care. In such a space, memory will not remain frozen in time—it will become part of everyday life.
The garden's central area will feature a cozy semicircular space with a bench. It will host gatherings and commemorative events. Separate seating areas near the trees will offer places for those who want a moment alone.

Work on the garden is scheduled for this fall, in late October or early November. The Lychakiv District Administration is commissioning the work, while the investor, Liga-Investment LLC, is funding the project.
The designers envision the garden as a welcoming place of remembrance, togetherness, and lasting gratitude to Ukraine's defenders.
BackgroundAs previously reported, Lviv's Znesinnia Regional Landscape Park has added a new educational clearing. Visitors can learn more about trees and how to determine their age. The new space sits within the playground at the foot of Mount Stefana, where the stairs begin.
Rubryka also reported that Zaporizhzhia's Alley of Remembrance for Fallen Heroes has unveiled a metal map of Ukraine dedicated to service members who went missing under special circumstances. The memorial already displays more than 100 plaques bearing the names of male and female defenders whose families continue to await their return.
