Solutions to win: Lviv engineers triple range of Ukraine’s Plastun ground robot with solid-state battery

Plastun has been operating at the front since 2023. Ukrainian forces use it for logistics, evacuating the wounded, and laying mines. The robot weighs about 35 kilograms and can carry up to 50 kilograms of cargo or a wounded person weighing up to 120 kilograms.

The system's certified range was 25 kilometers, but in combat conditions it could realistically cover about 10–12 kilometers. Because of this, the robot had to return regularly for charging, while charging points had to be placed closer to the front line.

PAWELL Battery engineers replaced Plastun's standard lithium-ion battery with a solid-state one. As a result, its range increased to 75–100 kilometers.

At the same time, the robot itself does not need to be modified: the new battery is compatible with the standard power electronics, control system, and charging infrastructure.

The new battery provides about 60% more energy per kilogram. Its weight doubled, but the energy reserve per charge increased fourfold.

The increased range opens up new types of missions, including:

The developers expect to scale the same principle to other unmanned ground systems used by Ukraine's Defense Forces.

Background

It should be noted that Ukraine has begun combat testing of its first jet-powered interceptor drones, designed to destroy Russian Shahed drones with jet engines. One of the new Ukrainian systems can reach speeds of more than 600 kilometers per hour.
