Two Ukrainian children win International Mental Arithmetic Olympiad in Portugal
Among the winners were siblings, 7-year-old Nicole and 10-year-old Oleksandr Kovalenko. They currently live and study in Ireland.
The children have been practicing mental arithmetic only since October 2025, but during this time, they have already won several awards at Ukrainian and international competitions.
Oleksandr started with third place at a Ukrainian online Olympiad and later repeated this result at an international competition. After that, he won a Ukrainian Olympiad, and now he has taken first place at the international level as well.
Nicole also quickly moved from her first competitions to top results. At her debut international online Olympiad, she made the top 10, and at the next Ukrainian competition, she won first place.
Now both children have become international champions.
The brother and sister train with the same teacher, who has already prepared more than one winner of international competitions. Her daughter has also become a world champion in mental arithmetic and memory sports.
The family says these results were made possible by regular training, support from loved ones, and the children's own perseverance.
Background
It should be noted that Lviv schoolgirl Anna Telehina took first place in the most difficult category at an international robotics competition held in South Korea. Another Lviv resident, Oles Letyty, placed among the top five, taking fourth place in the Energy Solution category.
It should be noted that Roman Mielamud, a graduate of the Mariupol Lyceum in Kyiv, won a gold medal and became the overall winner of the European Olympiad in Artificial Intelligence. The Ukrainian team also took second place overall, winning two gold medals.
It is worth noting that the Ukrainian team won four medals at the International Biology Olympiad (IBO), held in the capital of Lithuania. Three participants received silver medals, while one schoolgirl won bronze. This performance became Ukraine's most successful result at the competition since 2006.
Ukrainian school students also won five awards at the European Physics Olympiad (EuPhO), held from June 12 to 16, 2026, in Gothenburg, Sweden. Thanks to this result, Ukraine took first place in the team standings among participating European countries.
