Artillery Battalion Commander: If We’d Had CAESAR at the Start of the War, It Would Have Seriously Affected the Front

The French CAESAR self-propelled artillery system is currently one of the best in service with the Armed Forces of Ukraine, as it can work with different types of ammunition, has a long range, and hits targets with maximum precision.

This was shared in an interview with Ukrinform by Major Denys Chmykhun, commander of the self-propelled artillery battalion of the 148th Separate Artillery Zhytomyr Brigade of the Air Assault Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, UATV English reports.

“CAESAR is currently one of the best self-propelled systems in service with the Armed Forces of Ukraine. It’s newer compared to others, can work with different types of ammunition, has a long firing range, and hits targets with maximum precision, and it’s also very mobile and maneuverable. If we’d had even a few CAESAR battalions at the start of the full-scale war, before FPVs and Lancets were being used yet, it would have seriously affected the front line,” Chmykhun noted.

According to him, the soldiers of the battalion have not only successfully learned to operate the systems, but can also repair them when needed. The French vehicle has a lot of electronics, and when it produced error codes, crew members studied each one through an online translator and resolved it. This self-propelled howitzer can be finicky, since it wasn’t designed for this intensity of combat operations.

The commander noted that CAESAR engages every target it manages to reconnoiter. This includes enemy personnel, drone control points, takeoff sites, guns, mortars, and artillery.

“We fire wherever our shells can reach. It’s satisfying to destroy enemy guns, mostly 152-caliber, since they cause trouble for our guys carrying out assaults. It’s great when you hit precisely and understand that this gun is out of action, and somewhere a field ammunition depot starts detonating. The enemy scrambles, chaos breaks out, and it’s satisfying to watch,” the major added.

The soldiers of his battalion are well trained and work with skill and precision. The core of the unit is the former 148th Separate Self-Propelled Howitzer Artillery Battalion (the 148th Brigade was formed on its basis in 2023 — ed.).

As previously reported, the main targets of the French CAESAR self-propelled artillery system are currently enemy manpower and its drone launch points.
