United to win: NATO tests new counter-drone system using Ukraine’s battlefield practices

To this end, NATO's Allied Command Transformation has launched the Layered Counter-UAS Interoperability Exercise (LCI-X), which includes relevant training.

During the second phase of the exercise, held in Finland, participants tested not individual counter-drone technologies but ways to combine them. Sensors, command systems, tactical cells, and response options were integrated into a single system under real jamming and spoofing conditions. Ukrainian JATEC experts played a key role in the exercise, helping ensure maximum realism. They used their battlefield experience to advise on the development and implementation of the enemy action scenario.

During the exercise, JATEC experts helped develop the Red Team scenario for fixed-wing drones and FPV multicopters. They also participated in executing the scenarios and directly controlled FPV crew actions. The team defending against the attack practiced detecting, identifying, and tracking targets, virtually intercepting them, and testing the transmission of this information to the command post.

About 10 companies from different countries presented their solutions. During the exercise, NATO assessed systems from various manufacturers for detecting, recognizing, and intercepting targets, as well as their ability to transmit data in real time.

The next phases of LCI-X exercises will focus on integration with NATO air command and control systems and on cross-border operations.

Background

As Rubryka previously reported, Ukraine is expanding cooperation with NATO in the field of drones. By the end of 2026, it plans to conclude seven bilateral Drone Deal agreements with NATO countries. Kyiv has already signed six such agreements with countries in the Middle East, the Caucasus, and the Baltics.
