UK to help secure nuclear fuel for Ukraine's power plants under £210 mln deal

The funding will enable British company Urenco to supply enriched uranium to Ukraine's state nuclear energy operator Energoatom.

The agreement was reached during a meeting between UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi at Downing Street last week.

The British prime minister said the supply of enriched uranium is intended to help Ukraine maintain the stability of its energy system through the coming winters despite ongoing Russian attacks on energy infrastructure.

"Russia's aggression threatens not only Ukraine but the security of all Europe. That is why the United Kingdom is stepping up — cutting off the revenues that fuel Putin's war and ensuring Ukraine has the energy it needs through the winters ahead," Starmer said.

The UK government emphasized that the deal is significant for Ukraine's energy security, as Energoatom generates more than 50% of the country's electricity.

In addition to supporting Ukraine's energy system, the agreement is expected to create jobs and boost exports in the United Kingdom. More than one-third of the enriched uranium will come from a Urenco facility in northwest England.

The financing, provided by UK Export Finance (UKEF), builds on a previous two-year agreement for the supply of nuclear fuel to Ukraine.

The UK government stated that the new arrangement is intended to strengthen Ukraine's resilience and its ability to withstand Russian attacks on critical energy infrastructure.

"By securing Ukraine's energy supply, the agreement strengthens the country's resilience and its capacity to resist Russian attacks on energy infrastructure, directly supporting the security interests of the United Kingdom and the wider Euro-Atlantic community," the statement said.

At the same time, the United Kingdom announced a new package of sanctions against Russia. The measures are expected to target Russia's so-called "shadow fleet" — vessels used to circumvent international sanctions and transport energy exports.
