Drones likely strike Yandex data center in Russia again, disrupting services
The platform confirmed that the data center had completely stopped operating as a result of a drone attack.
"The remaining resource configuration is considered unstable. The platform is experiencing a critical outage, so we recommend using any alternative disaster recovery plans. Communication channels with technical support may be unstable. The team is assessing the damage and possible recovery plans," the statement said.
Following the incident, outages were reported in Russia affecting applications that relied on Yandex data centers. These included Yandex Home, Yandex Music, and Telemost.
Alexander Avdeyev, governor of Russia's Vladimir region, confirmed that drones had attacked infrastructure on the outskirts of the city of Vladimir. A fire broke out following the strike, and the shutdown of two substations left 5,000 residents without electricity.
Power is expected to be restored using a backup supply system once the threat has passed.
Residents of homes closest to the targeted facility are being evacuated. According to the governor, no residential buildings have been destroyed, and no casualties have been reported so far.
It is worth recalling that the company's data center was first attacked on October 8. At the time, a fire was reported at the Sasta machine-tool plant in Russia's Ryazan region, where a Yandex data center is located.
The following day, part of the infrastructure at Yandex's data center in Kaluga, Russia, was damaged.
The attacks have continued following several Russian drone strikes on data centers in Kyiv. One of the affected facilities, operated by Cosmonova, suspended operations, prompting several media outlets to report service disruptions on September 26.
