Putin Seeks To Restore Soviet Union, Five More Countries Face Russian Threat — Wadephul

Russian President Vladimir Putin wants to restore the Soviet Union, meaning the threat from Moscow extends beyond Ukraine to five other countries, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said in an interview with German broadcaster ntv, UATV English reports.

Wadephul noted that Russia has territorial claims not only against Ukraine but also against Georgia, Moldova and the three Baltic states — Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

He pointed to Putin’s 2005 address to Russia’s Federal Assembly, in which the Russian president described the collapse of the Soviet Union as the “greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the 20th century.”

“If, in his view, this was the greatest catastrophe, then he probably wants to undo it,” Wadephul said.

The German foreign minister stressed that the Baltic states are now members of both the European Union and NATO, meaning any Russian attack on them would directly affect Germany and its allies.
