Russian forces attack Ukrainian-Moldovan border crossing: authorities suspend traffic through it

One of the strikes hit the infrastructure of the "Tabaky" crossing point.

The attack damaged the checkpoint's buildings and structures. Fires broke out at the sites, and rescuers have already contained them.

Authorities are currently not allowing people or vehicles through "Tabaky." Drivers and passengers are being directed to other crossing points. The Ukrainian side informed Moldova about the situation.

Background

It is worth noting that this incident became the latest in a series of cases in which Russian drones violated Moldova's airspace or crashed on its territory.

As Foreign Minister Sybiha said, on August 20, drone debris was found near Giurgiulești, about one kilometer from the Ukrainian border. Moldovan specialists preliminarily established that it belonged to a Geran-type UAV.

They found two craters at the site. Inside, they discovered metal fragments that may have formed after the warhead detonated. About six meters from one of the craters, investigators found engine parts and other drone components. The investigation continues to establish all the circumstances of the incident.

In addition, on August 9, a combat drone exploded in southern Moldova near the village of Crocmaz in Ștefan Vodă district. Police said they had recorded this type of aircraft on the country's territory for the first time.

Also, on the night of July 13, one of the Russian attack drones used to target Ukraine entered Moldova's airspace and exploded near the village of Copanca in Căușeni district. Moldova's Ministry of Defense later confirmed that it was a Russian Shahed-type, or Geran-2, attack drone. According to the ministry, the drone entered the country's airspace during Russia's attack on targets in the Odesa region.
