Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant loses external power again in 27th blackout at site

Backup diesel generators are currently keeping the nuclear plant running.

Energoatom head Pavlo Kovtoniuk said regular blackouts at the Zaporizhzhia plant gradually damage equipment and increase safety risks. Frequent activation of diesel generators causes the equipment to deteriorate faster.

The previous blackout at the plant occurred on August 13.

Background

The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant has been under Russian occupation since March 4, 2022. Russian troops and military equipment remain on the territory of the nuclear facility. The invaders disregard the safety of Europe's largest nuclear power plant, which often ends up on the brink of a blackout. It is also known that Russian forces have mined parts of the plant's territory.

On September 1, 2022, an IAEA mission arrived at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. The mission includes experts from Poland, Lithuania, Serbia, China, France, and other countries. It does not include representatives from the United Kingdom, the US, or Russia.

In June 2023, Russian forces blew up the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant. Because the destruction of the Kakhovka Reservoir reduced water supplies, the Zaporizhzhia plant has enough water for cooling only while operating in cold shutdown mode.
