United to win: Germany allocates additional €300 mln for Ukraine’s ammunition under Czech initiative
Pistorius called the "Czech initiative" an important tool for supporting Ukraine and thanked Prague for continuing the project. Zůna, for his part, called Germany a strategic partner of Czechia in defense and security and noted its major responsibility for protecting Europe.
According to the Czech Defense Ministry, contracts have already been signed this year to supply Kyiv with about one million rounds of ammunition. Officials note that last year, Ukraine received 1.96 million rounds of large-caliber ammunition under the project.
Background
Czechia launched the project in 2024, mainly with the support of former Prime Minister Petr Fiala, who presented the proposal at a meeting of European leaders in February 2024, and President Petr Pavel.
The initiative involves finding available large-caliber ammunition on global markets, securing its purchase with funds from partner countries, and then transporting it to Ukraine.
About 20 countries have joined the initiative, including Canada, Germany, Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Belgium, Finland, Portugal, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Spain, and Slovenia.
Germany is the largest foreign donor to the Czech ammunition initiative, which received a total of 1 billion euros last year.
The current coalition of ANO, SPD, and the Motorists initially considered ending the initiative. Ultimately, it decided to preserve Czechia's administrative and organizational role, but the state no longer participates in the purchases itself.
