Zelensky discusses air defense, Russia sanctions, and arms supplies with US senators in virtual meeting
The online meeting was attended by: Republican Party representative, Chairman of the Senate Budget Committee Lindsey Graham, Co-Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee Jeanne Shaheen, Co-Chairman of the Veterans Affairs Committee, Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal, Chair of the Senate Democratic Leadership and Policy Committee Amy Klobuchar, Democratic Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, Democratic Senator Michael Bennett, Democratic Senator Adam Schiff, and Deputy Chairman of the Senate Democratic Caucus Richard Durbin.
Zelensky briefed senators on the frontline situation, including around Pokrovsk, saying October saw Russia's highest losses since the start of the full-scale invasion—more than 25,000 killed, by Ukraine's count. He added that Russian morale is falling, but authorities are likely to use various incentives, including cash, to keep troops in the field.
According to the head of state, Russia does not want to stop the war, but is only increasing its military presence in Ukraine, so it is necessary to increase pressure on it. Special attention is paid to the use of frozen Russian assets to defend Ukraine. The senators reported that they are working on this issue and are preparing a relevant bill.
Zelensky also thanked the United States and President Trump personally for the adopted sanctions and called for continued work in this direction.
The head of state also informed the public about the weapons that Ukraine needs to protect itself from Russian aggression, in particular, Tomahawks, and the strengthening of air defense.
Senators Richard Blumenthal and Lindsey Graham assured that they would continue to work on promoting their bills on sanctions, as well as on recognizing Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism if it does not return the abducted Ukrainian children. According to them, this bill has broad bipartisan support.
During the conversation, they discussed in detail the work to return Ukrainian children and the personal efforts of US First Lady Melania Trump. Volodymyr Zelensky reported that the parents of the children who were returned, thanks to her assistance, wrote a letter of gratitude to the First Lady of the United States.
In addition, the senators assured the unwavering support of Ukraine from the United States, both bicameral and bipartisan. They noted the courage of the Ukrainian people in the fight against Russian aggression.
