Lilac Is This Fall’s Unexpected Nail Color Trend

Fall nail color trends usually serve up a menu of full-bodied burgundies, warm espressos, and pumpkin spice, but one pastel color managed to creep into our autumnal wardrobes: lilac. New York City-based nail artist Miss Pop describes the color as being “where pastel purple meets pink.”

On Pinterest, the color started bubbling up heading into spring and summer, which is to be expected. What was surprising, however, was how it held beyond that window. For example, searches for “lilac dress styling” and “milky lilac nails” rose 345% and 425%, respectively, in August and September 2026, compared with the same period in 2025. “This signals that lilac is more than a fleeting seasonal shade,” says Sydney Stanback, global head of trends and insights at Pinterest.

Data aside, the color has been seen out in the wild in very different settings this fall. At the US Open, the unofficial end of summer for tennis fans and New Yorkers alike, Tate McRae had lilac-painted nails. Miss Pop sent sheer lilac pedicures down LoveShackFancy’s recent runway show. Multiple celebrities, like Florence Pugh and Emilia Clarke, walked down its navy carpet in the color. And makeup brands, like Prada Beauty and Make Up For Ever, have been rolling out fall collections featuring the airy shade of purple.

But why is a color that’s typically associated with warmer weather suddenly in full bloom this fall? Lilac is an easy option when you’re ready to shift into the cooler season but still want something vibrant on your nails, explains Sarah Chue, a Los Angeles-based nail artist. “It’s a much more toned-down and cool-toned color [compared to] summer's bright colors,” she says.

Part of lilac’s staying power may also come from its subtlety. Chue considers it a “sweet spot between neutral and colorful.”

Ahead are just a few ways to wear the color on your fingertips. Whether you prefer to wear it as a barely there French tip or beneath a pile of rhinestones, there’s a lilac manicure for you.

Sometimes, a hint of color can make a real difference. If you prefer a minimalist nail look, but want to switch things up ever-so-slightly, swap the classic white tips of a French manicure for lilac. It’s enough to elevate it without abandoning the clean, polished look.

While lilac bushes have come and gone for the year, you can still wear the blooms on your fingertips. Paint detailed florals with regular polish or reach for 3D gel for a more sculptural take.

As sweet as lilac can read, it could handle a little extra hardware and bling. Gems, gold, and metallic details add contrast to that delicate color. If you’d like a simpler manicure, consider adding tiny gold studs at the center of each nail. But if you prefer it among clusters of crystals, we won’t stop you!
