Wait, Is Chappell Roan Wearing Feathers on Her Nails?
Chappell Roan and her pal Olivia Rodrigo are gearing up for the release of “Expectations,” a remix of Rodrigo's song of the same name, and its accompanying video on Thursday, October 15—so of course they need to give fans a little tease at what's to come before said song and video drops. And if Rodrigo's latest TikTok is any indication, the glam is going to be good. As in, pink feather manicure and ice-blue eye shadow good.
Rodrigo posted a short video set to a snippet from Heated Rivalry, with herself in the role of Shane and Roan as Ilya. The two join hands before revealing their full looks; Rodrigo's nails are super short and cherry red, and Roan's are the complete opposite: ultra long and shimmery platinum-silver, with fluffy, hot pink feathers glued to the base of each finger for an extra dose of cheeky kitsch factor. They're maybe not the most practical nails for everyday wear—imagine wet feathers when you wash your hands!—but they're perfect for what appears to be a very colorful and cheeky music video. And this isn't actually the first time she's worn feathers on her nails; in 2024, she visited The Tonight Show in avian-inspired makeup with skinny white plumage attached to her mani.
The feather manicure may have been the first thing we noticed, but Rodrigo's teaser promises some equally fun, fanciful makeup and hair too. After the “reveal,” where the two Grammy winners pose and smile holding hands, we see Rodrigo in a set of Bettie Page-style microbangs and pastel blue shadow applied all the way up to her brows—a pretty major departure from her go-to loose waves and subtle makeup. Roan, for her part, wears pale green eye shadow accented by mod-style graphic eyeliner and tons of pink blush, plus some high-contrast strawberry blonde streaks in her signature red hair.
We've seen Roan and Rodrigo in action before; the two are good friends and frequent collaborators. Roan even opened for Rodrigo's Guts tour before her own superstardom, and seeing the two perform together is basically the Hair Olympics. They're also beauty icons, even though their looks typically fall at opposite ends of the glam spectrum. From this teaser, it looks like Rodrigo could be experimenting with a more Chappell-esque glam, and to say we can't wait to see it—feather nails and all!—is an understatement.
