Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s engagement was the proposal heard round the world (or at least shared all over Instagram). Naturally, since the news went viral, speculation has been swirling about every possible facet of the upcoming ceremony: What will her dress look like? Where will the ceremony take place? Who’ll be invited? One of the biggest questions on our minds, though, is what Swift’s wedding hairstyle will be.
Swift’s signature hairstyles have gone through just as many evolutions as her music. At the top of her career, she became known for those springy, bright blonde curls styled with a deep side-part. A few years down the line, as she transitioned from country to pop, she traded the side-sweep and curls for blunt bangs and sleek blowouts, not long before swapping those out for a shoulder-skimming lob. These days, softer blowouts with a hint of curl are her default.
But even through all those change-ups, every hairstyle, cut, and color still feels distinctly Swiftian. “She keeps it soft, feminine, and polished, but there’s always a modern edge,” New York City colorist Min Kim says. “Whether it’s waves, bangs, or a sleek blowout, her hair always feels intentional but never overdone. She stays in that sweet spot between glamorous and approachable." We can only assume she’ll be approaching her wedding hairstyle the same way.
We wish we could tell you what the actual plan for Taylor Swift’s wedding hair is, but chances are there isn’t even one in place yet. If Swift and Kelce have picked a wedding date, it hasn’t been publicly announced. Plus, Swift is notoriously tight-lipped about her personal life these days, and her glam team is equally tight-lipped about how they create her looks. That’s why we tapped a few unaffiliated experts to tell us how they’d style her hair for the big day if they were to get the gig. And in the meantime, we’ll be taking bets on which one she’ll choose.
A soft and simple chignon, Kim says, would be a perfect way to harken back to Swift’s earlier days. She wore versions of this style just about everywhere in the late 2000s: In 2009 alone, she wore similar curly chignon updos to the CMA Awards (pictured above), the MTV MVAs, and the Grammys, among plenty of other events.
It might have been Swift’s award show go-to, but Kim thinks it would work for any wedding just as well—but especially for Swift’s wedding. “It checks all the boxes: classic, photogenic, and full of that undone polish Taylor does so well,” she says. The key would be making sure the curls can move freely without risking things falling out. To do that, Kim says she would layer in L’Oréal Professionnel Vitamino Color Spectrum Glass Shine Serum and finish with a flexible hairspray.
From the release of “Tim McGraw” to now, Swift has played with her natural hair texture in just about every way imaginable, including the polished, waist-length ringlets of the Fearless era, the scrunched waves of Reputation, and even the charming, humidity-fueled frizziness of the Eras Tour.
Stephanie Angelone, a hairstylist and extensions specialist in New York City, loves how Swift spotlights her curls and wants to see that texture front and center in her wedding hairstyle. “I’d enhance them with a small quarter-inch curling iron like Trademark Beauty Mood .375" Wand Attachment and then have the curls loosely pinned up in the back or to the side with wispy pieces hanging,” she says. It would probably look something like the style Swift wore to the 2022 American Music Awards (pictured above). But even if she opts for something else, it seems likely that curls will be incorporated into her final look somehow, given her hair history.
In addition to her trademark curls, Swift has remained fully faithful to wearing a fringe. That’s why Miami-based hairstylist Franck Izquierdo would make Swift’s bangs the centerpiece of her wedding hairstyle. “Taylor gravitates toward loose, lived-in waves, chic updos with a romantic twist, and her signature bangs,” he says. He would blend the fringe into an updo for her wedding hairstyle, not unlike the look she wore to the 2019 Billboard Music Awards (pictured above).
To start, he’d prep her wet, freshly washed hair with IGK Good Behavior Blowout Balm for frizz prevention and heat protection. After it’s dry, he’d curl the hair loosely with a large-barrel iron, alternating directions for lived-in texture. From there, he’d “pull the hair back softly, securing into a low bun,” then “blend the bangs so they flow naturally, styling them with a round brush and light hairspray.”
California-based hairstylist Castillo Bataille pictures something similar: a pulled-back updo with lots of texture and a focus on face-framing bangs. “Taylor Swift gravitates toward styles that enhance her natural texture and highlight her features,” he says. “Brushed-out curls, soft bouncy waves, and her signature bangs are staples.”
He’d create a base with a smooth blowout using the L’Oréal Professional AirLight Pro Hair Dryer before dividing hair into sections and curling them with a barrel iron. To finish, he’d pin some of that hair back and finish with a flexible hairspray.
New York City-based hairstylist Stephen Thevenot says he wants to see Swift in something slightly more polished than her typical red carpet looks at her wedding. Ultimately, his approach would depend on the neckline of her dress, but he does know for sure what he’d do with those bangs. “I would love to soften her fringe,” he says, “I’d have her grow them out a little bit so they could be swept to the side. I’d want to see her face on her wedding day.”
As for the overall style, Thevenot gravitates toward simplicity, suggesting something in the center of the updo-to-hair-down spectrum. “I would pull it back into a lower chignon, and have a few pieces covering the sides of her ears,” he says. It might look something like what Swift wore to the 2018 Billboard Music Awards (pictured above).
Rodney Cutler, a New York City-based hairstylist, also has visions of Swift wearing some kind of curled updo for her ceremony—but he has something very different in mind for the reception. “For the second look of the evening, I’d recommend letting the hair down into loose, effortless waves for an easy, elegant style,” he says. “It would highlight her natural beauty and close out the evening with understated glamour.” Achieving the look would be simple: After releasing her hair from an updo, he’d finish it off with Redken Dry Texture Finishing Spray to give it a little edge with some texture. In our heads, we’re flashing back to the 2024 Golden Globe Awards (pictured above), one of Swift’s best looks to date.
