Rebuilding Ukraine: Naftogaz plans to build geothermal power plant in Zakarpattia region
Specialists are assessing the geological structure of the Solotvyno basin to evaluate the potential of gas-geothermal wells and deep geological horizons.
This represents Ukrgasvydobuvannya's first project harnessing geothermal energy for electricity generation. The facility will operate as a pilot project to test the integration of geothermal resources into Ukraine's energy supply.
The location in Solotvyno was chosen due to the region's subsurface thermal characteristics. The official project name is "Ecofield Solotvyno."
Geothermal energy extracts heat from the Earth's interior, which can be utilized for direct heating or converted into electricity depending on underground temperatures and flow characteristics. Ukrgasvydobuvannya's initiative focuses specifically on electricity generation.
Key operational focus areas in Solotvyno include:
Technical parameters, including projected generation capacity, construction timelines, and investment costs, have not yet been disclosed.
Should the pilot project prove successful, Ukrgasvydobuvannya plans to evaluate the scaling of similar geothermal facilities in other energy-viable regions of Ukraine.
Background
On the border of the Lviv and Zakarpattia regions, installation of the first wind turbine at the Ostrovsky Wind Park in the Nyzhni Vorota community was recently completed.
Additionally, Ukraine's Ministry of Economy, Environment, and Agriculture completed the Environmental Impact Assessment for a proposed wind power plant in the Turie-Remety community of the Zakarpattia region and issued a favorable ruling for project implementation.
Rubryka also examined whether homeowners with rooftop solar panels retain electricity during general blackouts and if a home can achieve true energy independence. Read more in the feature article: "Energy-efficient green solutions: do they work during blackouts?"
