Solutions to win: Defense Ministry buys 5,000 pickups for military, saving over ₴2 bln
The military's need for pickup trucks remains large and constant. Until now, volunteers' fundraising campaigns and service members' own resources had largely covered this need.
This time, the state has, for the first time, centrally purchased such a large number of vehicles for the Defense Forces — 5,000 at once.
The Defense Procurement Agency DOT of the Defense Ministry held an open tender to purchase 5,000 pickup trucks for the military. The procedure began back in May so that the first vehicles could start reaching troops in the autumn.
The first pickups have already been delivered to the military. The entire batch should reach the Defense Forces by the end of 2026.
At the same time, the open bidding process allowed the state to cut costs. The tender saved more than 2 billion hryvnias in budget funds. Officials plan to direct this money to other needs of the Defense Forces.
The procurement took place through a competitive procedure in Prozorro. The entire batch was not awarded to a single supplier; the tender was divided into several lots.
As a result, six different suppliers will deliver the 5,000 pickup trucks. This approach should ensure competition among participants and reduce dependence on a single supplier.
The Defense Ministry says it is gradually moving defense procurement to competitive procedures. This allows the state to buy more equipment and weapons with the same budget funds, while making military supplies more stable and predictable.
Background
It should be noted that the Defense Procurement Agency DOT earlier announced its first procurement of unmanned ground systems in line with the tactical and technical specifications set by Ukraine's Ministry of Defense.
