According to Zelenskyi, residential buildings in the capital were damaged, including a high-rise building whose upper floors were destroyed, as well as a children's hospital and a school. So far, 12 people are known to have been killed in Kyiv, and one person in the region. Search and rescue operations are continuing.

"My condolences to all relatives and loved ones. About 40 more people were injured. In the Odesa region, the enemy attacked a checkpoint on the border with Moldova with drones; in the Chernihiv region, it targeted gas infrastructure. I thank all rescuers, medics, police officers, and utility workers who have been helping people from the first minutes," Zelenskyi wrote.

He noted that "unfortunately, the world does not always respond as needed" to Russian strikes, while Moscow continues to invest resources in ballistic missiles and escalation.

Zelenskyi added that "as long as Ukraine does not have enough anti-ballistic systems, Russia will not seriously think about peace."

Overnight on August 20, air defense forces shot down 186 aerial targets, including 145 drones that Russian forces used to attack Ukraine. They also shot down 31 missiles and two Banderol loitering munitions. Russian aerial weapons hit 28 locations. The main direction of the Russian attack was the Kyiv region.
