Ukrainian author Andrii Kurkov's story included in anthology of Booker Prize winners and nominees
Speaking to Suspilne Kultura, Kurkov said that the anthology will feature his short story "One Should Not Be Afraid of Depth", dedicated to the Kyiv Reservoir, also known as the Kyiv Sea. According to the author, he wrote the story more than 20 years ago.
Kurkov explained that last year the Booker Prize committee approached him with a request to contribute one of his works to the upcoming collection. The invitation came after two of his books were longlisted for the International Booker Prize.
The writer submitted three short stories written between 1995 and 2005, including one about the Orange Revolution.
According to The Guardian, the anthology will also include works by Booker Prize winners Anne Enright and David Szalay, as well as Booker Prize nominee Nadifa Mohamed.
The collection has been compiled and edited by Roddy Doyle.
The book will be published as part of the Quick Reads program, which has been promoting reading among adults in the United Kingdom for the past two decades.
The book will cost £1 (approximately €1.20). The low price has been set to encourage more people to read.
In addition to selling the book at a symbolic price, the The Booker Prize Foundation will distribute 12,000 free copies to people with limited access to books, participants in the Books Unlocked prison reading program, and partner community organizations.
The initiative comes in response to research showing that 55% of British adults read less than they would like to. The most commonly cited reasons include a lack of time, difficulty concentrating, and the high cost of books.
According to anthology editor Roddy Doyle, the project aims to help people who rarely read take their first step into literature and discover stories that resonate with their own experiences.
As previously reported, British journalist and writer of Ukrainian origin Peter Pomerantsev received Poland's Ryszard Kapuściński Award for his book How to Win an Information War: The Propagandist Who Outwitted Hitler, which explores the fight against Nazi propaganda during World War II.
