Ukrainian students win gold, silver, and 17 other awards at environmental science olympiad in the US
The final stage of the competition took place in the United States from June 8 to 12 and brought together young researchers, inventors, and artists from around the world. Participants presented their ideas and solutions to pressing global challenges.
This year, Ukraine was represented by 39 winners of the national GENIUS Olympiad Ukraine selection. They competed in six categories: Science, Programming, Speech, Music, Art, and Short Film.
The Ukrainian team earned a total of 19 awards:
According to the Junior Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the gold medal was awarded to Kateryna Kravchenko from the Rivne region for her project, "Destruction of Natural Landscapes as a Result of Illegal Amber Mining", in the Art category.
Kateryna has just completed the eighth grade and is particularly interested in environmental issues. According to her mother, she was inspired to create the project after witnessing the devastating consequences of illegal amber mining. The international jury highly praised the work and awarded the student from Rivne the gold medal.
Meanwhile, the silver medal was awarded to Viktoriia Bondarenko from the Kyiv region for her short film Roots of Responsibility.
Bronze medals were also awarded to Daria Makhynia from the Kherson region, Oleksandra Tetiorkina from Kyiv, Yelyzaveta Cherednichenko from the Kyiv region, and Polina Chernenko from the Volyn region.
An additional 13 Ukrainian participants received honorable mentions in the categories of Science, Programming, Art, Music, Speech, and Short Film.
Ukraine's Minister of Education and Science, Oksen Lisovyi, noted that the success of Ukrainian school students during the full-scale war demonstrates the resilience of the country's education system and its ability to create opportunities for children's development even under extremely challenging conditions.
The President of the Junior Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Stanislav Dovhyi, emphasized that participation in competitions like GENIUS Olympiad helps students develop critical thinking, research skills, and experience working in an international environment.
The Junior Academy of Sciences also announced that on June 15 at 11:00 a.m., the GENIUS Express carrying the Ukrainian team that represented the country at the competition finals in Rochester will arrive at Kyiv Central Railway Station.
As Rubryka previously reported, the Cuboid Museum of Mathematics, created by the Junior Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, received a special distinction at the Ecsite 2026 European conference of science centers and museums in Sweden. The award recognized the museum's achievements in engaging children and young people in science.
