Russia Continues to Build a Digital “Iron Curtain” — CCD
Russia’s authorities continue to strengthen a digital “Iron Curtain” by tightening state control over the country’s online space.
According to UATV English, the Center for Countering Disinformation (CCD) under Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council reported this on Telegram.
“The State Duma has banned Russians from using any foreign email services or online platforms for authorization. From now on, Russian citizens will be able to log in only through Russian phone numbers, the state services portal Gosuslugi, or biometric identification. Owners of websites that continue to allow authorization through non-Russian services will face fines of up to 700,000 rubles (approximately $10,000),” the statement said.
The CCD noted that the new law is another step toward establishing total state control over Russia’s internet space.
According to the agency, the blocking of foreign services, constant mobile internet shutdowns, and online censorship disguised as “whitelists” are all aimed at isolating Russians from independent sources of information and placing the population under comprehensive state control and wartime propaganda.
As previously reported, large-scale internet outages in Moscow have led to a significant increase in sales of pagers, radio communication devices, and landline telephones.
