Russian losses in war against Ukraine surpass 1.5 mln killed and wounded – General Staff

According to the General Staff, Russia's current losses in a single war have exceeded the combined losses of the Soviet and Russian armies in all wars and armed conflicts of the second half of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century combined.

In particular, the number of Russian soldiers killed and wounded during the full-scale war is 100 times higher than the Soviet Union's losses in Afghanistan over 10 years.

This figure is also 125 times higher than Russia's officially recognized losses in the First and Second Chechen wars.

The General Staff stressed that behind every recorded Russian loss is a specific Russian soldier who came armed to Ukrainian territory. It also noted the daily work of Ukraine's Defense Forces and the entire Ukrainian people.

As Rubryka wrote, on September 8, the hottest area was the Pokrovsk frontline. In total, 263 combat clashes took place along the front, and the occupiers' losses totaled 1,480 personnel. According to the report, total enemy personnel losses during the war reached about 1,500,870 people.

It should be noted that in July, the Russian army lost 42,860 soldiers killed and wounded at the front. This was the highest monthly figure since January 2025 and one of the largest since the start of the full-scale war.

Background

As Rubryka wrote, in 2026, Russia was preparing a new spring-summer offensive in southeastern Ukraine. To do this, it used a strategic reserve and planned to increase the size of its grouping in Ukraine by about another 20,000 troops.

At that time, Russia's grouping in Ukraine numbered about 680,000 people. Its further reinforcement came from strategic reserves. According to Ukrainian intelligence, Russia intended to capture the entire territory of Donbas by September.

At the same time, Ukraine's Defense Forces planned to conduct a strategic defensive operation in 2026, combining it with counteroffensive actions on certain sections of the front to exhaust Russian troops and create conditions for future larger-scale operations.

On March 15, President Zelenskyi stressed that the spring offensive of Russian troops had failed, but they did not plan to stop the war. According to him, Russia currently does not have the forces for a large-scale offensive, so it is conducting only tactical infiltration attempts, which Ukrainian troops are destroying.

On July 10, Oleksandr Syrskyi, who was commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine at the time, said that in the first half of 2026, the pace of Russian advances more than halved despite Russia's nearly twofold advantage in personnel and equipment. The Russian army's average monthly losses amount to about 32,000 service members killed and wounded.
