Zelenskyi warns airlines: "Russian skies are becoming completely unsafe"
The head of state also addressed diplomats from countries working in Ukraine and Russia. He urged them to inform their capitals of the danger posed by flights in Russian airspace.
The president also urged airlines currently operating flights to Russian airports, including Moscow and St. Petersburg, as well as other key destinations, to monitor the situation.
"It is important that the relevant airlines that are now flying to airports, first of all in Moscow and St. Petersburg, and to other key Russian destinations, hear this. Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and our relevant institutions will provide international bodies with comprehensive information on the dangers in Russian airspace. Civil aviation has no place among drones," he concluded.
Zelenskyi also confirmed that the Americans had asked Ukraine to suspend strikes on Moscow and St. Petersburg on August 25, August 26, and August 27, and that "we observed this pause; there were no strikes." During those days, US Central Intelligence Agency Director John Ratcliffe visited Moscow.
Zelenskyi said that new meetings are now being prepared in Moscow and that Ukraine "will take this into account." He said Ukraine would suspend attacks on Russia at the request of diplomats.
"We always support every step toward peace, toward ensuring that Russia does not make this war endless. The war must end, and leaders are right to tell Putin this. Therefore, for the sake of diplomacy and negotiations, when partners approach us on this matter, we will ensure that Russian skies are cleared of drones for specified periods of time and in specified directions," the president added.
Background
On December 25, 2024, an Embraer aircraft flying from Baku to the Russian city of Grozny crashed near Aktau in Kazakhstan. According to news agencies, the airliner sent a distress signal while it was over the Caspian Sea.
The crash killed 38 people. Some people survived. According to Kazakhstan's Ministry of Emergency Situations, 29 people survived.
Andrii Kovalenko, head of the Center for Countering Disinformation under Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council, said a Russian surface-to-air missile system had shot down the aircraft.
On January 6, 2025, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said representatives of the Russian Federation were responsible for the deaths of Azerbaijani citizens in the crash of the Azerbaijan Airlines passenger aircraft. He called for those responsible to be punished.
