3 million schoolchildren start new academic year in Ukraine, including about 240,000 first-graders
Iryna Borzova said schools may hold in-person classes only if they have shelters. According to her, as of today, 11,375 educational institutions in Ukraine meet this requirement.
Among other things, Iryna Borzova said about 2.2 million schoolchildren will study in person, while another 700,000-800,000 will study in a mixed format. About 200,000 pupils living in frontline areas will study fully remotely.
Another 400,000 Ukrainian schoolchildren who are abroad will also study remotely.
According to Borzova, 95% of schools in the capital are ready for in-person learning, as reported by local authorities and the Ministry of Education and Science. At the same time, she reminded parents that they have the right to choose the learning format.
"Parents have the right to choose the learning format. If they believe that there is currently a danger to their child and that in-person learning is impossible, even if the school has a shelter, they can submit an application and transfer the child to remote learning. Accordingly, the child's place will be preserved," Borzova said.
According to her, educational institutions will decide individually whether to use in-person, remote, or mixed learning formats.
As Borzova recalled, 5 billion hryvnias were allocated from the state budget in 2026 for the reconstruction and construction of new shelters. This year, 113 such facilities have already been built or reconstructed. Another 20 facilities are now being prepared for commissioning.
According to her data, more than 840 mobile shelters have been installed at schools in 49 front-line communities. Metro schools and underground educational institutions operate in the Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia regions. In total, there are now more than 100 of them.

It should be noted that Ombudswoman Nadiia Leshchyk earlier said that holding mass events in schools on September 1, including ceremonial assemblies, is dangerous because of the risk of Russian shelling.
