CIA chief proposes trilateral meeting between Trump, Zelenskyi and Putin in Moscow to end the war — Axios
According to the outlet's sources, Ratcliffe's visit was partly aimed at determining whether the heads of Russia's intelligence services could help persuade Putin to take steps towards resuming US-mediated negotiations with Ukraine.
According to Axios sources, U.S. officials told Zelenskyy that Ratcliffe had also discussed the possibility of resuming peace talks in Moscow.
What is known about Ratcliffe's trip to Moscow
As previously reported, CIA Director John Ratcliffe was reportedly in Moscow to hold meetings. News of his trip emerged after a U.S. Air Force Boeing C-17A Globemaster III transport aircraft and a motorcade of American diplomats were spotted at a Moscow airport.
According to Financial Times correspondent Christopher Miller, officials from the Trump administration had asked Ukraine not to strike Moscow, St. Petersburg and Russia's northern regions with long-range missiles and drones. This "quiet period" was reportedly intended to last from August 24 to 26.
According to Miller's sources, Ukraine agreed to comply with the request.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Ratcliffe may have warned Russia against a possible attack on NATO member states during his stay in Moscow. However, no official details of the talks were disclosed. The Kremlin, meanwhile, explained the visit by saying it was part of maintaining contacts between the intelligence services of Russia and the United States.
Later, on the evening of August 26, US President Donald Trump commented on reports about the trip and rejected suggestions that Ratcliffe had travelled to Moscow solely to persuade Russian dictator Vladimir Putin not to test NATO's readiness for confrontation or threaten the United Kingdom, which had announced plans to increase its support for Ukraine.
Trump described the visit as "semi-routine" while noting that one of its key objectives was to help bring the war against Ukraine to an end. According to him, the United States is interested in ending the war.
